About image format conversion
Different image formats trade off file size, quality, transparency and browser support differently — there's no single "best" format, only the right one for a given job. Pixuno's converter re-encodes the image directly in your browser using the Canvas API, so switching formats is instant and never leaves your device.
JPEG is still the universal default for photographs — every device and platform supports it, and lossy compression keeps files small at some quality cost. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it the right call for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with sharp edges or flat color. WebP effectively replaces both for the modern web: smaller than JPEG, transparency like PNG, and supported by every current browser. AVIF pushes compression further still, at the cost of narrower (though growing) support.
One case worth calling out: iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, a format almost nothing outside Apple's own ecosystem opens reliably — Windows File Explorer, most upload forms and older editing tools all choke on it. Pixuno reads HEIC/HEIF directly, so converting a photo straight off an iPhone to JPEG or PNG is a one-step drag-and-drop, no "export as" dance in Photos first.

Which formats can I convert between?
Pixuno supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and BMP as output formats. You can open JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, SVG, HEIC and HEIF files — including HEIC and HEIF photos straight from an iPhone, no manual conversion needed. Note: converting a GIF removes animation (only the first frame is converted).
What quality setting should I use?
For web images, quality 80–85 typically produces excellent results with a much smaller file size than 100. For print or archiving, use 90–95. PNG is lossless so quality setting does not apply.
What is WebP and why should I use it?
WebP is a modern format developed by Google. It provides 25–35% smaller file sizes than JPEG at equivalent quality, with full transparency support. It is supported by all modern browsers.
What about AVIF?
AVIF is the newest format and can compress even better than WebP. However, browser support is still spreading — it works in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+ and Safari 16+. If compatibility is important, use WebP instead.
Why would I convert a HEIC photo instead of just keeping it?
HEIC is efficient but poorly supported outside Apple devices — many websites, older editing tools and Windows apps can't open it directly. Converting to JPEG or PNG makes the photo usable everywhere.
